I have taken large and tough animals with this rifle (elk in Colorado and Idaho, and zebra in South Africa) … The 35 Whelen is a well-behaved cartridge, and is at its best with medium burning powders like IMR4350. Also, no problem with brass, ever. In my experience, the recoil of the two cartridges is just about the same, or so close as not to make a difference. Even Weatherby is building rifles for it. A 200 can be loaded to the same velocity in the .35 Whelen as the 180 in a .30-06.
